Boys & Girls Club of Flagstaff to Open Club at Existing Cogdill Recreational Center

Flagstaff, Arizona – January 6, 2012 – The Boys & Girls Club of Flagstaff announces the planned opening of a Boys and Girls Club at the existing Cogdill Recreation Center located at 301 S. Paseo del Flag. The club has a projected open date of July 1, 2012.

The 8750 Sq. Ft. Cogdill Facility includes a gym, art room, computer lab, fitness, playground and outdoor tennis courts. The facility is located in the Brannen Homes community near Mark Grace Field and is currently operated by the City of Flagstaff Parks and Recreation. Head Start currently shares space at Cogdill and will remain as an important partner to the club.

“The city is excited to partner with the Boys and Girls Club. Funding programming at the Cogdill Recreation Center has been a challenge for several years. This option allows us to phase down financial responsibilities while increasing opportunities for youth in the community. It’s a big win for the city and the youth in Flagstaff” said Kevin Burke, Flagstaff City Manager.

According to ElizabethAnderson, Director of Community Enrichment Services for the City of Flagstaff, savings to the City is estimated to be in excess of $700,000 over a five year period. “We are very excited to have a Boys and Girls club in Flagstaff. Having previously been involved with the Club I have seen firsthand the positive impact it has on school age youth in the communities they serve.”

A steering committee was formed in 2011 from a cross section of community leaders and citizens to study the feasibility of establishing a Boys and Girls Club in Flagstaff. “The generous arrangement with the city allows us to immediately begin efforts of establishing the club and raising the necessary funds to sustain future operations” said co-chairs Chris Bavasi and Don Lindner.

The steering committee is made up of co-chairs Chris Bavasi and Don Lindner, and committee members Elizabeth Anderson, Rich Bowen, Randon Cupp, Coral Evans, Rex Gilliland, Tim Hansen, Steve Haws, Branden Kavanagh, Mike Loven, Mark McCullough, Jeff Pugliano, Jim Pugliano, Ebby Sabbagh, Sherri Slayton, Dorothy Staskey, and Jim Stratton.
